The gesture of reaching is one of the most legible in the human body — the shift of weight, the extension of the arm, the turn of the shoulder that says there is something over there that isn't yet in hand. Gavin Dobson's figure turning toward something beyond reach carries that gesture in the paint with the loose expressiveness that characterises his figurative work.
Shown in Print Club London's Originals exhibition, Reaching sits in Dobson's sustained engagement with the male body in states of longing, movement and aspiration. The oil on board gives it the texture and warmth of a surface that has taken paint before, and the natural wood frame finishes the piece ready to hang. Signed. £450.
