Regret as a subject is unusual for Dobson — his work tends toward desire, pleasure, longing, the charged space between people. But regret is the shadow side of that territory, the feeling that arrives after something that couldn't be undone. Gavin Dobson's figure full of regret is rendered with the same loose expressiveness as his figures in moments of desire or joy, the paint not changing its quality to signal the different emotional content.
