To be behind a god — in the shadow of something that holds itself as perfect or untouchable, the view from behind stripping away the face and leaving only the body. Gavin Dobson's figurative oil paintings of the male form consistently deal with the gap between how bodies are mythologised (the ideal, the desired, the powerful) and how they actually are (uncertain, vulnerable, ordinary).
The painting is done directly on board, oil applied without a preconceived image — Dobson's aphantasia means the painting finds itself in the process, the figure and its title arriving together rather than one being planned before the other. Oil on board, signed. £450.
