Lip Bite pairs one of the classic gestures of vintage pin-up photography — the lip bite, a look of playful invitation — with a skull and a set of dental braces, the kind of tonal collision that runs through most of Cassandra Yap's work. It's the same juxtaposition of dark and beautiful that defines pieces like Till Death, here rendered with a slightly more dental, almost cartoonish edge to the macabre half of the image.
Yap's practice draws heavily on 1960s and '70s pin-up photography and halftone photomontage, mixed with skulls, feathers and butterflies into something she's described as dark, bold and humorous with a kinky edge. This print continues that lineage.
