A pond to wish at — the specific kind of still water that makes the viewer inclined to stop and consider something, whether or not there's a coin to hand. Gavin Dobson's Wishing Pond uses contrasting and complementary colours to build the composition, the colour relationships doing the work of establishing both mood and subject simultaneously.
Dobson's figurative work comes directly onto the canvas without a preconceived image — he has aphantasia and cannot visualise the painting before beginning it, which means the figure and the water find their relationship in the process of painting rather than being planned to coexist. Oil on board, framed in a wood tray frame, signed. £450.
