The Palettes series works like this: Gavin Dobson uses small canvas boards as palettes when mixing colours for larger pieces, and what gets left on those boards — the unconscious accumulation of marks made without intention — becomes the starting material for a new work. He then paints into what's already there, finding the narrative within the accidental.
Laundry Day sits in that lineage: the 4mm canvas board carrying marks that were made in the process of making something else, before Dobson worked into them to find this particular subject and this particular day. There is something fitting about a series called Palettes generating paintings of ordinary domestic moments — both are about what happens at the edges of the planned, in the space where preparation becomes its own thing. Oil on 4mm canvas board, framed in a wooden tray frame, signed. £450.
