Oil painting on canvas board. An examination of unplanned colours and shapes to tell a narrative. Part of the 'palettes' series, a collection of artworks created by using these canvas boards as palettes to pre-mix colours for larger pieces. What was left were beautiful expressive and abstract marks on boards - the figure is unplanned and found amongst the marks pre-made.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Gavin Dobson
Gavin Dobson is a contemporary artist based in London, creating limited edition screen-prints, alongside original oil paintings on canvas.
Gavin’s screen-prints are often a celebration of the object itself. Infused with a sense of nostalgia and situation, they bright and colourful, hopefully inviting an opening for conversation.
In recent years, Gavin’s painting practice has explored homosexuality and the various subcultures which surround it, looking into the expectations and stereotypes which gay men face, and how in turn this can effect ones mental health. His paintings are often loose and expressive tackling the emotional highs and lows of being a gay man in contemporary Britain.
Recent exhibitions include ING Discerning Eye at the Mall Galleries, Queer Frontier’s with Artiq, Focus 22 at The Design Centre, Choose Love at The Soho Revue, The Other Art Fair and Contemporary British Painting at the Bermondsey Project Space. Several of Gavin’s paintings are currently on display at The Hoxton Hotel in Southwark in conjunction with Saatchi.
