The figure by the lamp is unplanned — found in the marks already on the board from previous colour-mixing sessions, the lamp and the person sitting by it emerging from the abstract surface rather than being placed there in advance. Gavin Dobson describes this process as working into the board to find the subject: the pre-existing marks become a field of suggestion from which the painting draws its narrative.
The lamp itself in the title implies interiority and eveningtime — the domestic, low-light scene that contrasts with some of Dobson's more outdoors and daylight subjects. By The Lamp is one of the quieter pieces in the Palettes series, the figure caught in a moment of stillness rather than action or desire. Oil on canvas board, tray framed, signed. £450.
