Rain in Dobson's palette-board paintings has a particular quality — the white of the rain falling through marks that were already on the board from colour-mixing sessions, the chance patterns of the palette stage suggesting the scatter of precipitation without having been planned to do so.
Gavin Dobson's Palettes series is built around the premise that the unconscious marks made during preparation are worth attention in their own right. The boards absorb colour from multiple sessions of pre-mixing before he works into them, so the final piece carries a history that the intentional marks alone don't — layers of prior use visible in the texture and the ground. Oil on canvas board, worked into to find the narrative of the title, framed in a wooden tray frame, signed. £450.
