The entry point into Benjamin Thomas Taylor's ongoing Matisse-inspired series — Blue Nude Abstract Study takes Matisse's cut-paper nudes as its starting point and translates them through Taylor's halftone screen printing process, the dots of the printing technique becoming visible at close range, the image resolving as you step back.
Matisse's late blue nudes are among the most reproduced images in twentieth century art, which is partly the point of Taylor's engagement with them: he is interested in how imagery that has become part of collective visual memory behaves when it's pushed through a different set of hands and a different set of techniques. The halftone is the same process used in newspaper reproduction — a democratic printing method for a democratised image. Limited edition, signed. £145.
