The neon red shifts everything about how this print reads — where the candy floss pink version has warmth and nostalgia, the neon makes the image electric and slightly confrontational, the red pushing Marilyn Monroe out of soft retrospection and into something with more edge. The diamond dust, applied by hand after printing, catches the light against the red in a different way than against pink.
David Studwell‘s practice is built on the idea that colour does more than describe — it changes the meaning of the image it’s applied to.
