This screenprint was designed exclusively for Blisters: Time to Play in September 2023, which showcased over 50 emerging and established artists, each with a brand new and exclusive edition of handmade screenprints responding to the theme of PLAY. From fairground rides to broader concepts about colour and abstraction, the show comprised an array of styles from street art to fine art illustration. The exhibition presented pieces from renowned contemporary artists such as Anthony Burrill, Oliver Jeffers, Morag Caister, Lucille Clerc, Babak Ganjei, John Booth and many more.
Aching For The Ease Held By Many — the title comes from a different register than the show’s theme suggests: the ache of play, the desire for the effortless state that some people seem to inhabit naturally and others reach for. The hand-finished watercolour layer is worth noting in the context of Morag Caister‘s practice: an artist who works primarily in oils and pastels on paper, making a screen print and then returning to the surface to finish it by hand, the two processes combining in the way her painting and drawing always do.
Caister graduated with a BA in Painting from the University of Brighton in 2019. In 2022 she won Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year, resulting in a commission to paint Sir Lenny Henry for the National Portrait Gallery. Her work is held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery and Soho House. She was named on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe: Art & Culture list and the Evening Standard’s Art Power List 2023.
