The fifth in Alexandria Coe‘s Red Nude series — red oil pastel on cartridge paper, the line drawn directly and without revision. Oil pastel has a directness that pencil or charcoal doesn’t quite have: the marks are warmer, more resistant to the paper, the colour more physical than graphite. In red the effect is heightened — the body arrives with urgency and warmth simultaneously.
Coe’s practice is built on drawing from life, the figure typically present rather than referenced from photographs, the mark made in the moment of observation. Her simple abstract line drawings are concerned with freedom and form: the freedom being the line’s relationship to what it describes, the form being what remains when everything superfluous has been removed.
