Made for Print Club London’s Blisters: Way Back When — an exhibition that asked its artists to look back at a specific year with the particular mixture of affection and irony that comes with time and distance. Benjamin Thomas Taylor chose 1982, pulling from the year’s visual culture with the same sharp, joyful appropriation that runs through his wider practice.
Taylor grew up in Snowdonia and studied painting at the University of Brighton before establishing himself as a London-based artist whose pop art-influenced work has been commissioned by Nike, Rough Trade Records and Paolo Nutini (his album Caustic Love, which went to number one). His paintings and prints open up what he describes as hyperreal spaces — places that feel simultaneously recognisable and impossible, the familiar slightly heightened until it tips into something more vivid than memory.
