A single Monarch Butterfly screenprinted onto hand-painted watercolour paper.
The Monarch — Danaus plexippus — undertakes one of the most extraordinary migrations in the natural world: up to 4,500 kilometres from its summer breeding grounds in North America to its overwintering sites in the mountains of central Mexico. Its orange and black wings make it one of the most recognisable insects on earth. Kath Leone‘s five-layer screen print captures those markings in her characteristic layered inks. Due to the nature of the subtle watercolour painting of the paper before printing, every artwork is slightly different within the edition — the ground varying from copy to copy before the five ink layers are applied. Saunders Waterford 300gsm, five layers. Leone is originally from Cape Town, South Africa, now London-based. Signed. £75.
