Where the blue version of Meet Me In Matisse’s Garden has a single-palette restraint, the multi-coloured edition is Taylor at his most exuberant — multiple colour fields playing off each other, the botanical forms moving between them in the way Matisse’s cut-paper work moved colour across a composition without hierarchy or background.
Hand-finished at £225, this sits above the blue at £195 in the series, the additional work in the hand-finishing giving each copy a slightly different character. Benjamin Thomas Taylor‘s practice draws on artists he admires as a form of sustained creative conversation: his Hockney pool series, his Basquiat and Warhol typographic works and this Matisse garden sequence are all versions of the same impulse — the artist as an attentive reader of his predecessors. Hand-finished, exclusive to Print Club London. £225.
