ABOUT THE ARTIST
Gareth Williams
Gareth Williams is a designer, artist, and printmaker based in North Wales. Originally trained as an illustrator in the mid-eighties, he began designing band merchandise and record sleeves for independent labels, alongside editorial illustration.
In the early nineties, he started working for a publisher he had been freelancing for. He has now spent 33 years art-editing and designing some of the UK’s most iconic custom motorcycle magazines, among many other titles. In 2016, he began creating large-scale, illuminated 3D decorative art as an ‘analogue antidote’ to his digital workday. Inspired by pop art, fairground aesthetics, and old-school tattoos, his work features a bold, punk-influenced color palette. Many of these pieces now belong to private collectors across the UK and Europe.
He returned to printmaking in 2023 to make his designs more accessible, but it quickly became a full-time obsession. He aims to keep his process as digital-free as possible. His current works begin as small linocuts incorporating typography from a collection of antique woodblock letters. He prefers carving into soft, flexible materials to enhance the unpredictability of the lines, which become more exaggerated when enlarged for screen prints—giving each piece a unique character. Every print is hand-pulled in his studio.
