One colour and gold leaf — and that's enough, because the fried egg is already one of the most graphically satisfying objects in the domestic kitchen. The clear white against the golden yolk is a colour relationship that nature sorted out long before any designer got involved, and Gill Sheraton's Golden Yolk respects that by keeping the approach simple: one screen-printed colour, then the gold leaf applied by hand to the yolk after printing.
The restraint of a single colour is characteristic of her confidence as a designer — knowing when the image is complete and not adding more because you can. Sheraton graduated in Graphic Design in 2012 and has worked at award-winning creative agencies in London and Bangkok. One colour on 330gsm paper, gold leaf detail hand-finished by the artist at Print Club London's Hackney studios. Signed. £70.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Gill Sheraton
Gill Sheraton is a London-based designer and printmaker who graduated with a BA Honours in Graphic Design in 2012 and has since worked at award-winning creative agencies in London and Bangkok. Her screen prints take the small pleasures of food and drink — hot dogs, sauce bottles, martinis, jelly, ice cream, the classic Nice biscuit — and give them the graphic attention they’ve been quietly deserving. She prints by hand at Print Club London’s Hackney and Dalston studios, hand-finishing most pieces with gold or silver foil. The combination of bold flat colour, typographic wit and genuine craft running through the work is the direct product of that design-to-printmaker trajectory.
