Chustki is an original artwork by created using acrylic, monoprint, and watercolour on Khadi handmade paper.
Described by the artist as “a soft rebellion,” this piece features a lone female figure gazing longingly at the viewer, her headscarf serving as both protection and quiet symbol of strength. Part of Marcelina Amelia’s Cowgirls Sabbath series, the work explores themes of femininity, folklore, and emotional resilience.
Made using a one-off monoprinting technique and finished with hand-painted details, Chustki balances spontaneity and intention. The handmade Khadi paper, crafted from recycled cotton rags, brings a raw, tactile quality that echoes the ancestral and personal themes woven throughout the series.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marcelina Amelia

Marcelina Amelia is a Polish-born multidisciplinary artist based in Brighton, UK, whose work spans painting, print, textile, photography, installation, video, and performance. Drawing from her Polish heritage, her art explores migration, motherhood, mental health, and the complexities of the female experience, blending folklore with contemporary narratives. Her work navigates personal and collective memory, challenging norms and confronting vulnerability.

Educated at the Jacek Malczewski School of Fine Arts and the University of Westminster, Marcelina has exhibited internationally, from New York to Milan, and been featured in The New York Times and Art Maze. In response to political changes, particularly reproductive rights, she co-founded Grupa Łono (Womb Collective), a feminist art incubator promoting free expression and community. Through the collective, she curates exhibitions, organizes workshops, and fosters artistic experimentation.

Marcelina recently self-published Mamalia, a book exploring the transformative journey of matrescence and the complexities of motherhood. A studio member at Phoenix Art Space and part of the Rethinking Eastern Europe Collective, Marcelina’s practice focuses on art’s transformative potential, using it as a bridge between self-discovery and social change.
