Simone Brewster (b. 1983, London) is an artist, designer, educator and cultural change-maker of Jamaican and Trinidadian heritage. She studied Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London and holds an MA in Design Products from the Royal College of Art. Her practice spans sculpture, furniture, jewellery, painting and objets d’art. Furniture pieces including the Negress chaise lounge and the Mammy stool — exploring the history of Blackness and the oppression of women of colour — have been acquired by the Smithsonian Museum and the Museum of London. Her work has been exhibited at the British Embassy during the London 2012 Olympic Games as British Design Talent, at the Royal College of Art 175 Year Anniversary Exhibition, and at Collect at the Saatchi Gallery. Her ink paintings, which she came to in her forties as a means of exploring self-identity and the emotions sparked by motherhood, are the most direct and intuitive part of her practice — the Studies at Print Club London sitting alongside the architectural and sculptural work as the most personal body of her output.
