The large format pushes the cyanotype process somewhere it doesn't always go — at A1 scale the gestural quality of the hand-applied light-sensitive solution becomes a compositional element in its own right, the brush strokes and the variations in chemical distribution visible in a way that smaller formats don't permit. Craig Keenan uses both negative and contact printing in this piece, a combination he describes as highlighting how versatile yet constrained the process is: two different modes of image-making within the same photographic medium.
Each copy in the edition is unique, varying from the others as a consequence of the hand-applied process — the cyanotype solution painted onto the substrate by hand before exposure, which means the mark-making differs across the edition. Printed on A1 board, framed and ready to hang. The frame comes in the wood of your choice. £557.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Private: Craig Keenan
Drawing on inspiration from the rural and urban aspects of life, he combines his love of photography, illustration and screen printing, to create works that focus heavily on balanced compositions, textures and colours.
“I’m a Printmaker (with a penchent for screen printing and cyanotyping) And a Photogtapher (with a propensity towards abstract imagery) One tends to inform the other.”
Please note that each of Craig’s Editioned Cyanotype prints are unique and each may vary slightly (we think that’s part of the beauty though!)
