Chelsea Town Hall’s Flemish Renaissance facade on the King’s Road is one of London’s more assertively decorative civic buildings — a red brick tower and arched windows that make no effort to blend in with its surroundings. Angela Morris-Winmill gives it the map treatment: two layers of screen print applied to an original antique or vintage map, then hand-embellished with gold leaf.
The antique map beneath carries its own history — streets that no longer exist, names that have changed, a London that the building itself has outlasted. The gold leaf applied on top catches light and shifts with the viewing angle, which gives the finished piece a presence in a room that photographs consistently understate.
