Off Canvas, On Holiday Where our artists go when they put the brush down

Every artist needs somewhere to switch off, wander, and let the eye rest before it starts noticing things again. This summer, we asked a few of our artists one simple question: where’s your favourite holiday? Their answers say almost as much about their work as their work does.

LAXMI HUSSAIN

Tell us your favourite holiday destination, where do you love to go?

Philippines, I’m half Filipino, and my mum took us every few years from a young age so I can easily travel the country solo. It is also on my list to do central and south America, that would be so dreamy!

A favourite place to eat there?

Halo Halo de iloko, La Union, they make traditional ilocano (the native region I am from) food. We ate a famous sour broth soup called Sinigang straight out of big green coconuts, scooping the coconut flesh into the soup.

What draws you back, what you love about it?

Family always draws me back and the close connection I am lucky to have with them but also it isn’t called the Pearl of Asia for nothing, it is incredibly beautiful. Filipino’s are also called one of the happiest people, and they are always so friendly and generous with their time.

Tell us your favourite holiday destination, where do you love to go?

Costa Brava – Any of the little towns and villages along the coast or inland- Llafranc, Calella de Palafrugell, Begur.

A favourite place to eat there?

Pretty much any local restaurant in the area – Clara in Begur, Fiego in Calella de Palafrugell, Hostal Empúries.

What draws you back, what you love about it?

The food, the weather (all year round), the rhythm and pace of life, and the light and colours.
