Off Canvas, On Holiday / no.2 Where our artists go when they put the brush down
Every artist needs somewhere to switch off, wander, and let the eye rest before it starts noticing things again. This summer, we asked a few of our artists one simple question: where’s your favourite holiday? Their answers say almost as much about their work as their work does.
Tell us your favourite holiday destination, where do you love to go?
Brighton, UK
A favourite place to eat there?
In Brighton I always stop by No-Catch! I’ve been a vegetarian for over 10 years and I can still get the feeling of eating fish and chips by the sea (but plant-based!) Also, VIP Pizza is great too.
What draws you back, what you love about it?
I love that it’s somewhere you can relax in nature, by the sea, easy day trips down the coast to Seven Sisters, but at the same time, you have the lovely independent shops and cafes to mooch around. The best of both looking and relaxing!
Tell us your favourite holiday destination, where do you love to go?
Japan. I’ve only been to Tokyo and Kyoto but there’s so much more to explore.
A favourite place to eat there?
One thing about Japan, almost everywhere you go you’ll find food that’s either the craziest thing you’ve ever seen or the most delicious thing you’ve ever tasted. One of my favourite moments was watching the rockabilly dancers known locally as “roller-zoku” in Yoyogi Park.
What draws you back, what you love about it?
I’d love to go back this time with the kids, it’ll blow their little minds. There’s nowhere quite like Japan, with its mix of ancient traditions and futuristic energy, it’s a feast for the eyes and senses.
