Featured Artist // Claudia Borfiga
There was no better artist for us to feature this month than our much loved Print Club tech and freelance illustrator and printmaker, Claudia Borfiga.
Claudia’s recent trip to India has clearly inspired the need to create new and inspiring work, which we don’t doubt you will be as captivated as us by!!
Here’s a little summery from Claudia about the trip (who is due to be re-visiting over the next couple of months) and a small collection of photos, that make us all ache with a desperation to travel and explore tropical climates.
The Facts
I spent the first month of 2015 in India, with my friend Lizzie Lock who is an amazing milliner.
Top Ten Highlights were:
1 – Putting my forehead on a cows hoofs for a blessing from it.
2 – Block printing! It’s possibly as good as screen printing, an ancient craft that couldn’t be more hands on.
3 – Going to Raj Mandir cinema – its an art deco building that looks like a ridiculous trifle and the audience were so actively involved,
whooping for the heroes especially when the tops came off.
4 – Hawa Mahal/Palace of the Winds, Wes Anderson must have seen it before styling the Grand Budapest Hotel.
5 – Kite Festival in Ahmedabad, thousands of kites cutting each others strings followed by lanterns at sundown, phenomenal!
6 – Sleeping under the stars in the desert.
7 – Learning how to tie turbans, they’re 1m x 9m.
8 – Shopping in the bazaars, amazing goodies and street food.
9 – Camels, hairy pigs, elephants, naughty monkeys, street dogs and all the cows, especially a very short angry cow.
10 – Endless wedding ceremonies in our block print village
I’ve been working on lots of prints since the trip and hope to make them using natural pigments I bought in India.
