Intrusions // Valeska Hykel
13th – 21st June 2024
10 – 28 Millers Avenue, London E8 2DS
Opening night: 13th June, 6 – 9pm
Intrusions is a solo show by Valeska Hykel, exhibiting brand new unique monoprints and original paintings.
Valeska is a painter and printmaker based in Bristol. Her work is an ongoing dialogue between these two practices. Painting directly onto the screen’s mesh she creates monotypes that toy with the boundaries of painting within print.
Through a language of bold, gestural brush marks and an almost edible colour palette, Valeska explores the impossibility of uncovering ideal forms and celebrates the imperfection that process gives rise to. The resulting work comes forth as grand abstracts that play with notions of beauty. Referencing the magnificence of 17th century European still lifes, Valeska strives toward deceptively aesthetic work that symbolises the ongoing transparency between life, degeneration, and death.
Intrusions is comprised of a new body of screenprinted monotypes, painted spontaneously and directly onto the screen’s mesh, as well as the first of her large abstract paintings on canvas. Valeska was awarded the Rebecca Smith Prize for Printmaking, and in 2022 she was selected as a ‘Top Pick’ from the Curated Hang by the directors of Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair. Later completing Print Club’s Artist Residency programme in April 2023.
Exhibition open 13th – 21st June 2024.
