Jemima Sara // Print Club London

We are so excited to share this collection by Jemima Sara, the culmination of the artist’s recent month in residence at our Hackney studios.

Using expressive creative methods and immediacy in her process, Jemima’s work draws on day-to-day experiences including inner thoughts and observations, and navigating mental health. It was a joy to have Jemima in the studio and observe her captivating process: fluid and instinctive, Jemima’s drawings are visual diary entries which translated so naturally to the screenprinting and monoprinting methods. Bold mark making injected with Jemima’s sense of humour has resulted in a poignant and relatable collection of works which we are so excited to share with you.

Jemima Sara is a multidisciplinary artist who incorporates the fluidity of everyday life, mental health and freedom of expression into her practice.

Her formal training in Puppetry at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (graduating in 2018) followed by a MFA in Drawing at Camberwell (graduating in 2021) has enriched her drawing practice, allowing her to merge diaristic texts with the figurative.

Her practice has evolved to investigate drawing as a form of expression and communication. Driving meaning from the ‘nitty-gritty’ and the day-to-day, her work reflects the tumultuous experience of the mundane existence to ignite conversation as a form of self-therapy or so-called catharsis.

A form of personal outpouring, her illustrative journals are suggestive of wider experiences within both private and public spheres. Scraps of humour provide some relief from the discomfort or awkwardness they may impose.

“I was lucky enough to work with Print Club London on their artist residency. Over the course of the month, Print Club introduced me to many different methods of printing including monoprinting. The residency gave me the opportunity to play and experiment in different styles of printing which mirrors my current style and practice.

I began with working on screenprinting. My method of screenprinting is painting Indian ink directly onto tracing paper and then burning it onto the screen without digitising the artwork. This offers a direct and tangible translation of cathartic release into the works. Moving “the diary of daily journals” to finished screen prints.
During the residency I developed my monoprinting process. I admire monoprinting as the speed and spontaneity required does not allow for much flexibility over the composition of the work (as the ink dries onto the screen) and therefore fosters an automatic creative method similar to automatic drawing.

I really enjoyed playing with this instinctual process of making which links closely with the themes within my practice.” – Jemima Sara, 2023
