“Zoe and I would like to thank you so much for all of the hard work from Print Club London in the lead up to and during the Big Feastival last weekend. They worked exceptionally hard to make sure that the event was a success for us and were wonderful with all our visitors. The printing workshop was hugely popular and went down a storm with everyone. Please could you pass on our thanks too the whole team who participated and made it such a huge hit. It was great knowing that we could rely on them to look after their part of the project so well as there were so many other things that we needed to be engaged with elsewhere! ”

CRAIG-KEENAN-FEATHER-EYES-1You all know about our Beginner’s screen printing workshops, but did you know we also hold Cyanotype workshops!

Why not try something new and get involved!! You’ll be taught all about what exactly a Cyanotype is and the process of creating Cyanotypes. You will get the opportunity to make your very own prints to take away and put up on your own walls.

Cyanotypes were originally created for architects and engineers blue print designs, but now artists have adapted this technique and can now create beautiful pieces of artwork for everyone to enjoy.

Here’s a quick run down of the process of creating Cyanotypes;

Unlike screen printing where you would use a positive image, you are wanting to use a negative image for Cyanotype. Once you have your image printed on to a piece of tracing paper or acetate, it’s then time to prepare your paper. We also try to keep things interesting by bringing in an object which you would like to be a part of your finished print, this could be anything, but we think that plants/flowers work great for Cyanotypes.

We coat the paper in a light sensitive solution and leave in a dark room to dry. Once dried we will expose the paper with your negative image using UV light, the light will expose through the negative. We use an exposure unit for this which is perfect so you can decide how long your negative will need to expose.

Once exposed, as if by magic your design will appear as a positive on to the paper. Then all that you need to do is rinse your print under water, so that it will no longer be light sensitive and won’t continue to expose in daylight, wait for it to dry and TA DARR! You have your very own piece of artwork.

Here’s a couple of our Print Club artists who create amazing Cyanotypes;

Craig Keenan

“I’m a Printmaker (with a penchent for screen printing and cyanotyping) And a Photogtapher (with a propensity towards abstract imagery) One tends to inform the other.”

CRAIG-KEENAN-FEATHER-EYES3

Ben Rider

“My Work is built up from a dense hybrid of drawings, collaged imagery and multi – layered colours. I am a big fan the offsets, drips and fades to create an authentic distressed aesthetic.”

If we haven’t convinced you yet, here are a few photos from a previous workshop;

If you’d like to take part in one of our cyanotype workshops, then you can book your space here.

Print Club loves it when we get people into the studio who then blog, tweet and generally share their experience with us and you lovely lot!

Here’s one from a Tom Love who attended our Beginners Workshop earlier this month.

TOM LOVE

Print Club London

My first taste of screenprinting

Yesterday I headed up to Dalston for a one day screenprinting workshop for beginners at the famous Print Club London.

The day kicked off at 11am where 12 of us signed in and handed over our artwork to our tutors for the day, Oli & Elliot. Here I ran into my first problem – I thought it was a 2 colour screenprinting course but it was only a single colour course. This meant the artwork I had would look very different to what I had intended but at the end of the day I was there to learn the process of screenprinting rather than come out with a really great finished piece.

What I’ve decided to do is print the zoo stamp in 2 colours on my own and the 3 competition winners will get the 1 colour edition I printed at Print Club London as well as the 2 colour edition when I’ve printed it.

A lot of the day was taken up by explaining different ways you can screenprint as well as showing us some really great examples of professional work.

What I learnt is that 80% of screenprinting is prep work, and can get pretty messy – hence the lack of pictures of me actually MAKING the screen (sorry).

Eventually though, after learning to emulsion, wash, dry and expose the design onto the screenscreen you end up with this…

Now comes the really fun bit – PRINTING!
After clamping in the screen and making sure it’s positioned firmly in place you have to go through a few more technicalities such as – registering your screen to the paper. You do this so you know every time you put the screen down and print, you’re printing in the same place on each sheet of paper.

Now it’s time to get inky and enjoy yourself!

We often say we have the best technicians that any print studio could hope for and we really mean it. They are insanely talented illustrators, printers and absolutely awesome tutors too!

Craig KeenanBen Rider and Raiph Vaughn are part of an exhibition in London which is on Thursday 17th April. Come down and join us at 5th Base Gallery where we’ll be checking out the Halftone Heroes show!

Details are in the poster below:Halftone Heroes poster

Remember, the person who books the workshop for his group earns a £100 voucher to buy prints in our gallery!!

Last Friday Pinterest UK held an amazing Pizza and Printing workshop at the Print Club studios for their first community event.

Pinterest-PrintClublondon-2

The guests arrived straight from work and after a well-deserved pizza snack in our busy gallery, the 25 crafty Pinfluencers and bloggers were shown into the print studio for a tailor-made screenprinting workshop. After a brief introduction from our directors and technicians, some of our favourite artists, Maggie Li, Hattie Stewart, Jo HAM and Anthony Peters, demonstrated how to pull the perfect print and signed the exclusive Pinterest X Print Club artwork that they’d specifically designed to be printed on the night.

Pinterest-PrintClublondon-3

It’s so great to see so many happy faces in the studio and we absolutely love to teach people how to screenprint. We had the pleasure to meet some great bloggers and Pinfluencers who specialise in handmade works and interior design.

Thank you to Pinterest UK and the guests for such a fun evening. Happy printing!

If you’d like to enquire about workshops at Print Club, email us at [email protected]. We run different types of workshops and we can work out what’s best for what you have in mind!
